I am completely gobsmacked right now. ….. Let me explain…… a few months ago I started having other bloggers review my yarns and fibers.

The post from This Flourishing Life went out today. The article was so well thought out and so well written it brought tears to my eyes. Loni did a great job picking patterns that really showcased the yarn and the hand-dyed colors.

Mitts made from pulled silk by Loni at This Flourishing Life.

The only caveat is that I don’t spin this yarn but I help support women in India and Tibet by buying this yarn, this enables the women to have jobs to support their families and recycles a product that would normally be tossed into a landfill.

I feel it is a great addition to what we are doing at The Fiber of My Being. We can rescue fiber animals, help keep women employed, and save the earth, all at the same time.

Oh, before I forget they are having huge giveaways as well. You can get your hands on some of this yarn by entering Here.

Maddy and Gabby with Romeo

Maddy and Gabby with Romeo

I was hoping to work on my U-neck School Girl Vest. However, events had left it abandoned, languishing on the table waiting for me.

The goats are losing their coats so I have to hoard the cashmere before they rub it all off on the fencing. I planned to start yesterday. I bundled up and headed out to the barn. Then calamity struck I walked into the middle barn to grab the goat stand. I realized the barn was full of water with a sheet of ice underneath. We’ve had quite a few melting days mixed with new snow the last two weeks.  After closer inspection and shoveling  I realized the frost heave and the snow drifts where higher than the barn floor level. So I spent the next 2 hours chipping ice to create lower troughs for the the water to drain.

I can barely move my arms and even my fingers because I’m so sore….even my palms.  I know this will pass and I will be able to pick up my knitting again but in the meantime I’ll try to spin.

I have gotten some spinning done this week. I started working on this batt at my adult ed class where I’m teaching spinning and fiber prep. We had our wheel spinning class last thursday and it was amazing!!!!!! The students were great!!!!! They learned to spin and I got the opportunity to learn about other kinds of wheels. At the end of class everyone tried everyone elses wheel.

Eventually I hope to have enough wheels that I don’t have to require you have a wheel for the class. There are no close places to try a wheel around here so I hope to collect a variety of wheels. I really believe you should try wheels to find what you like and what fits you.

Mentioning New Wheels……. I found this baby going into an auction. She came with another maiden and a bulky flyer and 4 bobbins. I was able to make a deal with the owner and snatch her up before the auction.  There were also a set of handcarders included which will be just perfect for my fiber prep class this week. The wheel wasn’t looking real pretty at the time coated in dust and cobwebs. A little love and elbow grease was all she took to look beautiful again. The only thing I had to replace was her brake band. She spins like a champ!!!!!

I didn’t get my Back-To-School U-neck Vest done as quickly as I hoped. I found that friends visiting + a few drinks = having to rip back some. However I’m not too upset about because I think I will probably have it done by Wednesday or Thursday. My next project is to finish my Clarus. I admit to dragging my feet on this one …I know it has mistakes and I should just restart it ….it’s been waaaay to long since I worked on it.

Here’s how my vest is looking now.

The animals are having a lovely winter and it looks like Sassy is getting ready to drop her gorgeous cashmere coat soon.

Karakul have very distinctly colored fleeces. The lambs are born black with wavy curls and as they grow the curls open and the color begins to lighten. There is amazingly wide range of shades going form black, silvery blue grays, to golden tan,red-browns, white with other colors and pure white. Interestingly the wool seems to have no crimp.

The adults especially in the US often sport a double coat. They have a coat of guard hair over downy undercoat some will have glossy fleeces. There is also a great multiplicity in the fleece softness they can range from quite wiry to silky-smooth. The average staple is from 6 -12 inches. There is very little grease or lanolin compared to other sheep breeds. Fleeces are lightweight and have considerable volume.  Uses for karakul wool include carpets, rugs, and outer garments it also felts wonderfully.

I was trying to show the rusty red dark strands in this picture. However my camera wants to make them black.

The red color is amazing a creamy white with dark rusty red strands. I found the older sheep do not pass the neck test but the hogget (black) fleece comes close. I’ve been planning a woven rug and these fibers will be added for variety.
