Not literally of course……too cold and wet to spin. I wanted to do some spinning this week. As opposed to all the knitting last week.  SOoooooooo… onto the pics.

Or how about a silk blank plied with wool and then andean plied back upon itself. I couldn’t believe the amount of yarn I got from a little 1.75 oz silk blank!!!!

I decided to make  my own silk blank jewelry with what was left on the bobbin. I spun the fiber andean style many times until it was the length I wanted. Then I took some jewelry cord and a couple wooden beads, with a darning needle secured the ends and added the beads to the bracelet….. I have to say I really like it!!!!

I guess this what a girl does when her plans ( as well as the kids school) have been cancelled by an ice storm.  The beauty of it was breathtakingly worth it!!!!

I finished it last night one gorgeous midwinter wanderer

My midwinter wanderer

for my wintery wearing pleasure!!!!! I was so excited to finish this I did a marathon knitting session yesterday to marathon of the show Bones on my computer and stayed up till after midnight to get this awesome luxurious cowl/hood.

Back of my midwinter wanderer

I did use one size larger needles for the body as I’m a really tight purler and this pattern is all purled except for the edges and cables. I also added some extra increases starting earlier to add a few inches so the cowl would go over my wider shoulders. I cast off with an even larger needle and created a ribbed eyelet bind-off to make sure the lower edge was super stretchy. It’s definitely one of my favorite things.

We had an impromtu showing from some turkeys.

I had to stand over the table to get this shot!!!!

On Monday I shared my terrible phone pics of my handspun color affection shawl. Here are some spectacular blocking pics.

closer pic of section 2 and section 3

sections 1,2, and 3 of color affection

As I was blocking and stretching ….. I found a dropped stitch in the third section….. My knitterly heart started to race …oh the horror!!!!!!…… a dropped stitch …mid-project and it was already bound off. Crap!  What’s a yarny girl to do?

Then I came up with a plan ….I wasn’t sure it would work but it was definitely worth a try so that stupid dropped stitch would run like pantyhose. I dropped the stitch on a grey stripe …so I took some grey yarn I had left and darning needle I weaved in the tail (like for weaving in ends) about 5 stitches before the dropped stitch, I picked up the dropped stitch so it would be looped through the yarn and then continued weaving in the other side in the same manner. It seems to have worked! I didn’t think to take pictures as I was doing this …in my own defense I was having a knitterly panic attack. I did take some after photos though.

My new project midwinter wanderer is coming along nicely.  I did some fiddling with different types of needles and lengths of cord but my nickle needles and 24 inch cable seem to be working well for this project.

Inside the Bunny Barn

This weekend was amazing great holiday. Awesome meal, great friends, family, in addition Small Business Saturday was great. I also found that I need to fix a few things with the site to make it better.

Blue bunny after grooming

I spent today grooming bunnies, sending out orders and almost forgetting to blog today. I also made meatloaf today for 3 reasons (I don’t eat meat but I live with meateaters). Reason 1: I haven’t made a meatloaf since I went vegetarian over 3 yrs ago, Reason 2: The hubs requested it. Reason 3: It used to be one of my signature dishes and I wanted to see if I still had it:)

My handspun color affection shawl

Now that the family is taken care of on to the knitting. I finished my color affection shawl. It’s still in need of blocking but I love how it came out. I did more stripes than what was called for because I had sooo much yarn left. I also modified the increases toward the end by not doing the double increases as it was growing at an exponential rate. I did 13 stripes in the first section and 11.5 repeats in the second section. I was getting worried that I wouldn’t have enough of the 3rd color for the edging so I decided to stop.

What a gorgeous gray thanks to ambersky 235

A Herdwick’s grey fleece is not easily dyed, and is coarse, and so is best suited to use as carpet wool. This Fleece seems to shed water and dry quicker than most wool. The kemp can be separated from the wool to create a softer hand.

A great portrait by ambersky 235

The staple length is about 4 inches on mine. I have seen that it can be 3-10 inches. I found the fiber to coarse, kempy, slightly crisp, but also a bit slippery. It had an undeniable prickle as I wrapped the roving around my neck.  I would say this was definitely in the mid 30’s micron count.

I didn’t wish to dye this roving as the tweedy texture is beautiful to look at.
